1989 Bordeaux Thursday February 24, 2005 Speaker: Harriet Lembeck Wine Educator and author Michael Broadbent wrote "Unquestionably a great vintage and one which brought the decade to a resounding close." We tasted a dozen 1989 Bordeaux's including, Pichon Lalande, Palmer, Smith Haut Lafite, Beychevelle, Leoville Las Cases, Lynch Bages, La Fleur de Gay. Chateau Palmer was the favorite of the tasting. All the wines showed well. The wines were bought at auction. Prices for each wine can be found on the web. Fruit and smoky nose, a lot of new oak, woody aromas, cherry fruit, and plums, hint of raisons in palate. Long finish. Drink now. 0 N/A Château La Fleur de Gay - Pomerol Deep color, smokey nose, fruit, soft, long finish, delicious, aftertaste woody with fruit. Drinkable now. 0 N/A Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte - Pessac - Leognan Nice color, delicate nose, stylish, in balance, a little tannin, nice length, some bitterness in aftertaste. 0 N/A Château Chasse-Spleen - Moulis Deep color, rich, spice, a lot of new oak, big tannins, very nice fruit. One of the best Cru Bourgeois. 0 N/A Château Ducru-Beaucaillou - St - Julien Gravely soil, dark color, smokey, nice fruit, soft and drinkable, less tannin, balanced, sweetness of fruit in aftertaste, quite nice. 7 N/A Château Beychevelle - St - Julien Nice color, cedar nose, good fruit, rich, more tannin, lots of spice, drinkable now. 6 N/A Château Leoville-Las-Cases - St - Julien Nice color, small rim, smoky, cedar closet nose, lots of tannin, new oak, harmonious, elegant, perfect wine. Rated second in the flight. 17 N/A Château Montrose - St - Estephe Spicy nose, a lot of fruit, plums, cocoa, very tannic, tastes young. 5 more years. 2 N/A Château Lynch-Bages - Pauillac Softer, herbaceous, celery, woody, a lot of tannin, spicy rich, needs time. 4 N/A Château Pichon-Longueville-Baron - Pauillac Fresh flowers, mint, red cherry fruit, balanced, smoky, oak, pretty wine, lovely, very young, 2025. Rated third in this flight. 12 N/A Château Pichon-Longueville-Lalande - Pauillac Classic Bordeaux.
