Four Decades Of Amarone

Four Decades Of Amarone
Thursday, January 23, 2003

Speaker: Charles Scicolone, Wine Writer and Educator

According to Italian Wine for Dummies, Amarones are "rich, heady and robust." Michael Weiss, in Exploring Wine, states that these wines are "powerhouses full of rich and warming fruit." Wines are listed in the order of presentation. The 20 attendees were asked to vote for their three favorite wines in the tasting. Since the wines were purchased at auction and are currently unavailable, no prices are listed. Notes are a combination of the speaker and Vivian Tramontana's.

Wine Votes
Masi 1994
A wine produced in the modern style. Uses smaller barrels. Light color and young. Notes of chocolate, good fruit Drink now. Goes well with food. Venison would be a good match Will last for 15 years.

Bertani 1988
Traditional style that is aged in wood 2 years and then aged 7 years in bottle before release. Ruby red color with an almond nose. Chocolate fruit. A big and rich wine that is wonderful.
10
Righetti 1986
A single vineyard wine. The brickish color and off nose leads one to think this bottle has oxidized. The dry raisiny taste confirms this feeling.
4
Tommasi 1983
Good color, a big and ripe nose that is still showing lots of fruit. No discernable oak Old style of wine making.
2
Tommasi 1981
Good color. A big nose of vanilla and fruit. More forward than 1983.
18
Bertani 1980
Good color and a rich nose. On the palate, lovely fruit and a good aftertaste. Appears more alcoholic.
3
Bertani 1979
Darker color and less pleasing on the palate. More like port, sherry with a lot of alcohol Not the same quality as the others.
N/A
Tommasi 1977
Darker color but still clear and showing good fruit. Good nose and finish.
4
Boscaini 1977
This producer favors big barrels. The wine shows a more subdued nose. Oxidized to nose and mouth.
0
Bertani 1977
He keeps the wines in wood longer than most producers. His wines are usually best with age. A wine for winter.
17
Boscaini 1974
Single vineyard wine. The nose and taste is of dried fruits.
0
Bertani 1974
Good color and more subtle nose than Boscaini. Deep fruit and a warming finish.
19
Tommasi 1971
Lovely. Good color and a mellow nose. Big ripe fruit. Drinking well.
5
Bertani 1967
Good color with hints of coconut and stewed fruit. More notes of dried raisin rather than chocolate.
14
Bertani 1962
Lovely and quite subtle and supple. Big nose with colors like the 1988. This is a wine that is still alive with lush fruit and chocolate
