12 wines sourced from Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet grapes from three distinctly different regions of Australia - Clare, Coonawarra and Margaret River were tasted. Representatives for the wineries were present to discuss their wines.


Flight I: Riesling Votes Full Retail Price $
Pikes Clare Valley Riesling 2003
The wine offers aromas of lime, tangerine and hints of steely minerals. On the palate those citrus notes are further accentuated, with a lush mouthful of vibrant flavors. The finish is long and appropriately dry. Beautiful drinking now and years to go. The favorite of the flight.

The color is medium straw. The nose has aromatic floral characters of mandarin. A well-balanced and dry palate, clean finish.

Very pale straw color with green hues. Full flavored with mineral notes. Well balanced, clean and concentrated.

Wakefield "Promised Land" Clare Valley Unwooded Chardonnay 2002
Bright yellow color with hints of green on the edges.Ripe melon nose with faint tropical fruit. A mouth filling wine that bursts into life on the tongue. The palate is generous but soft with zingy green apple freshness and a creamy delicate finish.

Leeuwin Estate "Prelude" Margaret River Chardonnay 2000
Straw green color, aged in French oak barrels 10 - 12 months.The bouquet was of underlying malt and fresh pears. The palate was full and mouth filling and of dried fruit and nuts. A balanced wine lasting 3 more years in the cellar.

Penley Estate Coonawarra Chardonnay 2000
The color is medium yellow with touches of green. The aroma is melon and grassy fruit with a hint of soft French oak. The flavors are soft and smooth with lingering melon fruits. The oak is subtle but discernible, enhancing the grape flavors not overpowering them. A complex wine enhanced through malolactic fermentation. An elegant style with complexity of flavor, oak and acid. The favorite of this flight.

Mak Clare Valley Shiraz 2001
Deep purple /red color. Plum, blackberry, spice, clove and a hint of pepper in the nose. A mouthful of dark berry fruits, bittersweet, chocolate and spicy mint on the palate. Balanced, well structured can be cellared for five years and fabulous drinking now.

Cherry color, peppery, nutmeg nose. Spice and peppery flavors. Short finish.

Vibrant red color. Smokey, peppery dark cherry nose. Cherry fruit with black pepper on the finish. Well balanced. Excellent length of fruit, soft, round and ripe tannins. Lovely wine, ready to enjoy now. The favorite of this flight.
