We tasted 13 wonderful wines from Austria's boutique wineries. FRITSCH GRUENER VELTLINER STEINBERG 2005, DONAULAND was the favorite of Flight I Gruener Veltliner. FRITSCH, RIESLING RESERVE 2002, DONAULAND was the favorite of Flight II Riesling. NITTNAUS COMONDOR 2002, NEUSIEDLERSEE was the favorite Red. FORSTREITER ST. LAURENT 2003, KREMSTAL, FRITSCH PINOT NOIR P 2002, DONAULAND and NITTNAUS PANNOBILE 2001, NEUSIEDLERSEE had a 3 way tie for 2nd favorite Red.

Blend of several vineyards. Perfume on nose with hints of hay and blossoms, green apple, crisp and spicy on the palate, round, fresh aftertaste. Matches perfectly with vegetables, fish and sea food.

Single vineyard, 26 year old vines. Classic Gruner Veltliner. Spicy with hay aromas, fruit and hints of apple, minerals on the palate with lively acidity; elegant, Medium bodied with long finish. Should age for further development.

46 year old vines. White pepper, minerals, fruity, typical Veltliner spice, long finish. The favorite of the flight.

Forstreiter Gruener Veltliner Schiefer 2005, Kremstal
Kremstal, Hollenburg on the south bank of the Danube. Oldest vineyard dating to 1364. Vines are 35 years old. Concentrated nose with aromas of oranges, peaches, smoky, good balance of fruit and acidity, fruit, pepper, minerals on palate and long finish.

16 year old vineyard. Ripe fruits, pepper and spice on nose, rich and elegant on the palate with hints of tobacco. Massive with a very long finish and long aging potential.

More mineral, 5% Botrytis used. Nose of apricots, peaches and roses. Fruit and minerals on the palate, good acidity, complex, dense, balanced. Long finish. Will age for another 15 years. Very young. Great for Asian spicy dishes.

100% Blauer Burgunder /Pinot Noir. 25 year old vines. Deep ruby red, Cherry in the nose and ripe fruit on the palate. Complex, multilayer finish. Lovely wine. Three way tie for second favorite for the flight.

Blend of 85% Zweugektm 16% Blaufrankisch. 18 months in barrique. Dark ruby red, complex nose of dark fruits, (cherries and berries), spice, balanced, long finish. Three way tie for second favorite for the flight.

Blend of 40% Merlot, 30% Zweigelt, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Blaufrankisch, Dark red color, complex nose of hay, spice, cassis, cherries in the nose and the palate. Balanced, impressive tannin, long finish, enormous aging. A delicious wine. The favorite of the Flight.

Blend of 60%Chardonnay, 20%Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Neuburger. Rich yellow gold, complex fruit, honey, melon aroma, huge on the palate, balanced, long aftertaste. Will last forever. Exceptional wine.
