Châteaneuf du Pape is the most famous wine of the southern Rhone. The course, pebbly soil retains the sun's heat and allows the grapes to ripen fully, yielding a wine, made from as many as 14 grape varieties, with great concentration and long life. We tasted a dozen examples. The wines were purchased at Acker Merrill's auction. The prices listed are retail prices quoted from the internet. 1990 Chateau de Beaucastel was the favorite of the tasting.

Medium plum/ruby color, bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, herbs and balsam wood. Full bodied and lightly tannic with loads of fruit, long finish. Drink over the next 10-12 years. |

Opaque, ruby purple color, blackberries, licorice, black cherry in the nose. Full bodied, sweet, long finish. A blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mouvredre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance other permitted varietals. Maturity 2007-2025. Rated third in the tasting. |
