Speaker: Ford Crull - Wine Collector
Leoville Las Cases is the largest of the 3 Léoville properties and now the leading estate in St-Julien. Its' 97 hectares of vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of St-Julien and Château Latour. The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend (65%), and is matured in oak barriques (70-80% new) for 18 months.
Along with Château Pichon-Longueville-Lalande, this is the most exotically perfumed wine in the Médoc. Although a second growth it produces first growth quality wines.
12 vintages were tasted: 1966, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988,1989,1990,1994.
All the wines in the tasting showed well.
The wines were purchased at auction and from Ford Crull's cellar. The prices listed are retail prices quoted from the internet. The votes were for the best for drinking now.
