The Glorious Cuisine of Naples

The Glorious Cuisine Of Naples
Friday September 27, 2002

Naples is the epicenter of the renaissance in Southern Italian cuisine. Moreover, in the past few years as the wines from the region have considerably improved there has been renewed interest in them. With this in mind, Executive Chef Lello Arpaia prepared a traditional Neapolitan dinner (with some modern touches). Leonardo LoCascio, President of Winebow Imports, selected five wines from the region to complement the foods. No votes were taken for favorite wines as all were equally enjoyed. Notes are Jonathan Levine's.

Wines Full Retail $
2000 Di Majo Norante Greco di Tufo
Light, crisp and lively with lemony notes and a refreshing and clean texture. Long finish, with a bouquet of fresh white peaches and nectarines. The wine is completely dry and very light-bodied with delicate fresh fruity flavors. The components are well balanced and the finish is fresh, clean, and lingering with a refreshing crisp acidity.

It went very well with the hot antipasto, including a delicious polenta (see the recipe section for this dish).
$8.50
Regaleali Bianco 2000
A Sicilian Sauvignon Blanc. Rounder and fuller than many Sauvignon Blancs, it was also much bigger than the Greco. It was paired with fried Buffalo Mozzarella and arugula.

The wine shows notes of citrus and apples. Medium-bodied and zesty, it was a good match with the food. Personally, I preferred the lighter and crisper Greco.
$12.00
Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Rosso 1999
An Aglianico based wine from Campania. Ruby color with an intense perfumed aroma showing violets, cherries and plums. Well balanced and nicely concentrated with a warming texture and finish. Very elegant and chipper. The finish was fresh, fruity, and lively. Not powerful but a perfect match for the dense and chewy fresh pasta made with a milky dough.
$17.00
Argiolas Korem 1998
A blend of grapes native to Sardinia with some traces of Syrah and Merlot. Intense ruby color with enticing aroma of exotic black fruits and spice. Not overly aggressive and well concentrated. Nice balance of spice, fruit, tannins and texture. Full-bodied and smooth texture. A delicious match with the best veal I have eaten (see the recipe section).
$35.00
Botromagno Gravisano Vinmo Passito 1997
100% Malvasia Blanca from Puglia, the wine is rich and sweet without being cloying. The grapes are dried for one month to concentrate the sugar and flavor. Still a light color with a nose of honey, pears roses and orange blossoms. Long lasting and rounded in the mouth.
