The Sangiovese seminar begins with an overview of Sangiovese: its most recognizable characteristics, key regions where it is planted, and interesting facts about the grape. The focus then turns to Sangiovese as it relates to Tuscany. There was a thorough discussion of the Chianti zones, the Brunello and Vin Nobile appellations, important emerging area for Sangiovese such as Carmignano and the Maremma, and the styles and philosophies of prominent winemakers in the region. 12 to 15 select wines from the Winebow portfolio were presented to exemplify the topics covered.

95% Sangiovese and 5 % Colorino. Vinified in tank with no wood ageing. Perfume of cherry, pomegranate and ripe plums. The wine is bright, fresh with a long pleasant finish. |

Chianti Rufina DOCG 2001
90% Sangiovese and 5 % Canaiolo. This wine is vinified in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks and concrete vats. It spends time in steel tanks (30%), oak casks (50%) and barriques. It is then aged in wood and blended together in steel tanks. Fresh and fruity with good length and tannins. |

Chianti Classico DOCG 2002
95% Sangiovese and 5 % Canaiolo. Harvested from estate vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico. The wine is stored in 225 and 500 liter barrels for 7 months. Brilliant ruby red color with lovely bouquet of violets, iris and vanilla followed by deep layers of fruit on the palate. Dry and full bodied with hints of almond and notes of tobacco. This is a concentrated and round wine with a velvety feel. |

Chianti Classico DOCG 2002
90% Sangiovese, 7% Merlot and 3 % Colorino. The wine was in barrique for 12 months. Sweet sensations of berry and toasted oak in the aromas of mature cherry and violet. Forward fruit, tannin and alcohol achieve an elegant balance through a lingering finish. |

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 1998
95% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot selected from the healthiest estate grapes. Wine was aged in barrique (1/3 new, 1/3 -1year old, 1/3 - 2 years old). Soft, more complex, excellent balance, long finish. The favorite of this flight.

Carmignano DOCG 2000
70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.After maceration of 25 days, the wine was transferred to barrique for 20 months prior to being filtered, bottled and cellared for an additional 6- 12 months. Ruby red color, nose of vanilla, berries and licorice, well balanced with spicy nuances. |

Rosso di Montepulciano "Sabazio" DOC 2001
80% Prugnolo Gentile and 20% Canaiolo Nero. Vinified in stainless steel tanks. After malolactic was completed, the wine was transferred to Slovenian barrels and aged for 4 months. Violet in color. Big nose, good fruit and sweet tannins. |

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 1999
80% Prugnolo Gentile and 15% Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo & Colorino and 5% Merlot. Vinified in stainless steel tanks, racked and completed fermentation by the end of November. A portion of the wine was aged in 20- 50 HI barrels while a small percentage was aged in 3 year old barrique for 24 months. Deep violet in color with a very dense and intense bouquet. It is clean, complex, and very big on the palate. |

Brunello di Montepulciano DOCG 1998
100% Sangiovese. Ruby red in color with an ample bouquet of violet and vanilla. Dry and velvety on the palate. Rich with optimal balance of fruit, acidity and tannin. A lovely wine. The favorite of this flight.

70 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in barrique for 18 months. Deep ruby red color, ripe cabernet fruit in the nose, the wine is round and delicious. |

100% Merlot from 30+ year old vines. Wine is aged in Allier barrique for 2 years. Deep ruby red in color. The nose is like raspberry jam. Soft and silky on the palate, the fruit is backed by substantial structure. This wine needs age. |

Il Carbonaione IGT 1999
100% Sangiovese di Lamole grown 1.350 feet above sea level. The wine was aged for 18 months, 12 of which were in Allier, Vosge, Nevers and American oak barrels. Ample bouquet of blackberries and currant. A full bodied, warm, rich wine, balanced tannins, soft yet full of vitality with a long finish. The favorite of this flight.
