TastersGuildNY ROAD TRIP TO TANGLEWOOD
A Glorious Day of Music, Wine and Food
By Vivian Tramontana

TastersGuildNY had its first ever Road Trip on August 11, 2007, a perfect day of gorgeous weather and beautiful skies. We headed up to Tanglewood, the idyllic summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the Berkshires for a marriage of beautiful music, great wines from top wineries and delicious food. What can be better? We didn’t have to do any driving--a bus took us there and back.

Our day started early with a 7:30 AM departure from the Vanderbilt Entrance to Grand Central Terminal. We arrived at Tanglewood in time for the 10:30 AM rehearsal by the Boston Symphony of their Sunday program. We watched the orchestra and conductor work from inside the Koussevitsky Music Shed or relaxed on the verdant lawn while we listened to a program that included:

  • MOZART Overture to The Marriage of Figaro
  • MOZART Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat, K.271, Jeunehomme (Emanuel Ax, soloist)
  • HAYDN Mass in Time of War
After the rehearsal we headed across the lawn a few hundred yards for the 5th Annual Tanglewood Wine & Food Classic. The afternoon was spent tasting premium wines from over 100 vintners including wines from the leading producing regions of the world while feasting on fabulous artisan breads, smoked meats and other specialty foods. We met the winemakers and renowned chefs from New York, Boston and the Berkshires.

It was striking coming from the bustle of Manhattan to witness the sylvan beauty of Tanglewood, listen to the glorious constant of great music and meet the winemakers and the chefs.

Our sensory feast finished, we got back on the bus at around 4PM; happy, sleepy and satiated and arrived at Grand Central at around 7PM. Everyone had a marvelous time.
