The Undiscovered Wines of New Zealand

We tasted 12 wonderful wines from undiscovered wineries. Crossroads Marlborough (Waihopai/Wairau) Sauvignon Blanc 2005 was the favorite Sauvignon Blanc. Alpha Domus Unoaked Chardonnay Hawkes Bay 2005 was the favorite Chardonnay.

Mana Marlborough Pinot Noir 2005 was the favorite Pinot Noir and Crossroads Hawkes Bay RGF 2002 was the favorite Blend.

Melon and grassy aromas, medium bodied, balanced, round, crisp, some citrus flavors, long finish. The favorite of this flight.

Mineral, flinty nose and palate, dry, balanced, long finish.Will go well with oysters.

Seifried Sauvignon Blanc Nelson 2005
Grassy, herbaceous nose with passion fruit and mineral notes on the palate. Creamy, long finish with some acidity.

Waimea Estates Nelson Riesling 2002
Lovely floral notes on nose. Full bodied with high residual sugar content. Very juicy fresh apple, grapefruit flavors with crisp acidity and great length. Alcohol, acidity and fruit character creating a big mouthfeel. Almost bone-dry, the wine has a sweetness coming through from the alcohol and the ripe fruit characters.

Full bodied, Flavors and aroma of pear, apple, lime, and peach. Well balanced and medium long on the finish. Drink through the end of 2006. The favorite of the Chardonnay Flight.

Crossroads Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2005
Elegant, with subtle, but intense stone fruit and pineapple flavors and a fine-textured, creamy palate with fresh, youthful acidity giving balance. French barrique fermentation and maturation. Refreshing and restrained at present, this wine will improve through next summer.

Palliser Estate Pinot Noir Martinbrough 2004
A lovely nose with notes of fudge and toffee over sweet, ripe red fruits. On the palate this has weight and texture, with a silkiness and lovely sweet fruit playing against spicy oak and firm tannins. Elegant, long finish.

Crossroads Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabernet 2004
A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet; Fruit-based aromas of red currant, dark plums and dried herbs intermingle with a range of winemaking derived savory characters to create an immediately appealing and complex bouquet. The slight Merlot dominance gives the palate its characteristic rounded, fleshy structure while the Cabernet contributes length and grainy tannin texture.
