We tasted 16 wines from all the major wine regions of Italy; Flights I Vermentino di Sardegna DOC “Crabilis 2004: Pala (Sardegna) were liked by all. The favorite of Flight II was Muller Thurgau Trentino DOC “Maso Roncador” 2004: La Vis (Trentino), Flight III favorite was Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2000: Remo Farina (Veneto), second favorite was Villa Donoratico Bolgheri DOC 2003: Argentiera (Tuscany), 3rd favorite was a 2 way tie between Cannonau di Sardegna DOC “Triente” 2004: Pala (Sardegna), and Chianti Classico DOCG 2002: San Fabiano Calcinaia (Tuscany). Flight IV Moscato d’Asti “Giorgia” 2003: Cascina La Ghersa (Piedmont) was liked by all.

Vermentino di Sardegna DOC “Crabilis 2004: Pala (Sardegna)
100% Vermentino. The grapes were vinified in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. Straw color with green highlights and an intense floral and vegetable perfume. The palate has vegetable notes with good depth and balance and a long persistent aftertaste. Delicate and pleasantly refreshing on the palate.

Chardonnay Trentino DOC “Paola de Manicor” 2004: La Vis (Trentino)
100% Chardonnay. Perfumed nose, fresh on the palate with a crisp apple and pear long finish. Modern style. No wood used.

Bianco di Custoza DOC 2004: Remo Farina (Veneto)
A blend of Garganega, Tocai, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling grapes. It is a fresh, stainless-steel fermented modern-styled white, that is a brilliant straw color, with an appealing bouquet of jasmine, golden apples, ripe pears, and hints of basil. Balanced and clean finish.

Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC “I Classici” 2004: Terlano (Alto Adige)
100% Pinot Grigio. Terlano is a unique cooperative that is famous for its long-lived, intensely mineral white wines. Pinot Grigio is at its best in this high altitude dolomite environment. Fermented in steel and then bottled fresh, it provides hints of pear and minerals and is very bright and crisp. This wine can last for may years and still retains its strong acidity and freshness.

Muller Thurgau Trentino DOC “Maso Roncador” 2004: La Vis (Trentino)
100% Muller Thurgau. Bright straw, golden hue with aromatic nose of flowers, apricot and fennel. Strong style; fresh peach, mango and apricot with anise undertones on the palate. Complex, long finish. Lovely with prosciuto and melon, scallops wrapped in bacon or roasted pork with dried fruit stuffing. The favorite of this flight.

Flight III: Vini Rossi Votes Full Retail Price $  
Dolcetto D'Alba DOC 2004: Colle dei Venti (Piedmont)
This ruby red wine with purple reflections offers an intense fruit bouquet of violet and cherry. Dry on the palate with a cherry and blueberry fruit and almond finish with moderate acidity. Great with all Italian dishes from pasta to salami and prosciuto.

Barbera D'Asti DOC “Le Cave” 2004: Cascina la Ghersa (Piedmont)
100% Barbera, from the youngest 5 to 15 years old vines.After fermentation on the skins for 6 days, 20%goes through carbonic maceration to extract the freshness and fruit which is characteristic of Barbera grapes and is aged for 6 months in glass lined tanks. Clean, light. This ruby-red wine is dominated with notes of sweet fruit like cherries, blackberries, raspberries and prunes. On the palate, the wine is fresh and has a long finish.

Negro Amaro, Malvasia Nera grape. 3 years in wood. Inky color, earthy nose, rustic, powerful, silky textured wine with depth, complexity and long finish.

Nero d'Avola Sicilia IGT 2003: Marea (Sicilia)
90% Nero D’Avola 10% Merlot. Before release the wine is held for a minimum of 12 months in stainless steel. Deep dark ruby red and clove and violets in the nose. Flavors of hazelnuts, cassis and hints of green peppers fill the mouth. Serve with pastas with red sauces, stewed meats and slightly seasoned cheese.

Cannonau di Sardegna DOC “Triente” 2004: Pala (Sardegna)
95% Cannonau, 5% other grapes. After a temperature controlled fermentation, the wine spends 8 months in cement and stainless steel tanks and then rests 2-3 months in bottle before release. Intense ruby red color with subtle spice and mature red fruit aromas.Medium-bodied with good structure and a long finish.Tied as third favorite of this flight.

Chianti Classico DOCG “Bramosia” 2004: Donna Laura (Tuscany)
80% Sangiovese 20% Merlot. With a deep ruby color and intense aromas of cherry and red fruit, this Chianti Classico balances ripe fruit and acidity with well integrated accents of wood and spice. Long finish.

Chianti Classico DOCG 2002: San Fabiano Calcinaia (Tuscany)
90% Sangiovese 10% other. It is a lusty full-bodied wine with aromas of plum, black cherry and currents on the nose.. Opulent on the palate with plum, dark chocolate and black berry fruit, it rewards again on the finish with olive, spice and leather. Supple tannin gives it cohesiveness and structure. Long finish, Wonderful with flank steak, veal chop, game, hearty pastas and pecorino cheese. Tied as third favorite of this flight.

Villa Donoratico Bolgheri DOC 2003: Argentiera (Tuscany)
70% Cabernet Sauvignon,5% Cabernet Franc,25% Merlot. The second favoritie of this flight. Intense ruby red in color with purple reflexes. The nose is fruity and floral with hints of oak. Presents a generous, rounded palette and displays an unmistakable regional and varietal character. Finely structured and complex; balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering finish.

Duesanti Tenuta S. Giovanni Toscana IGT (Super Tuscan, Sienna) 2002: Tolaini (Tuscany)
75% Cabernet sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet FrancEach varietal is vinified separately in three tierstainless steel tanks, with frequent remontage and then undergo temperature controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new French barriques.Youthful, rich dark fruit, berry and cassis aromas meld with notable French oak spice. On the palate, full-bodied with deep but reserved fruit favors framed by rich oak. The excellent balance of fruit intensity with fine tannins indicates a cellar worthy wine.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2000: Remo Farina (Veneto)
65% Corvina, 25% Rondinella + Mollinara, 10% others.Red garnet color with orange edges, and spicy fragrance. In the mouth, it is warm, robust, and full bodied, velvety, pleasantly bitter and harmonious. An excellent wine forgame dishes and seasoned cheeses. The favorite of this flight.

Moscato d’Asti “Giorgia” 2003: Cascina La Ghersa (Piedmont)
100 % Moscato. Pale yellow with green highlights and has an intense bouquet of papaya, lychee nut and pineapple. Sparkling in the mouth it is delicate with layers of peach, apricot, tangerine and soft honey that dance on the pallet. It is charming as an aperitif, and perfect with fruit and pastry desserts.
